The Shanghai Motorshow is renowned as the most influential automotive exhibition in Asia. It attracts thousands of visitors, journalists and industry professionals every year – and the 2023 edition was the biggest yet. There were a total of 906,000 visitors and over 13,000 domestic and international press representatives!
In 2022, the Chinese market for new energy vehicles reached an impressive 6.8 million vehicles, accounting for two-thirds of the global total. China is also the largest exporter of electric vehicles, reflecting its growing influence in the development of the global automotive industry.
That's why China is considered an ideal testing ground for electric vehicles. Chinese customers have widely adopted electric vehicles, with electrification penetration reaching 30% in the first quarter of 2023. Plus, charging infrastructure is well developed in China. There are charging stations at every service station, and in some cities at least 30% of parking spaces in shopping centres reserved for electric vehicles.
Indeed, the Chinese government has strongly encouraged the installation of charging stations and battery exchange stations over the past decade. This proactive policy is facilitating the expansion of electrification in the country. Today, electric cars in China are offered at competitive pricing compared with traditional cars, giving customers the freedom to choose. New Chinese electric vehicle brands offer direct sales, and have set up showrooms in shopping centres to create a unique buying experience.
The Peugeot stand at the show made a splash in the Chinese market. Linda Jackson, Peugeot's CEO, highlighted the company's electrification vision and capacity for innovation through the Peugeot 408X and the Peugeot Inception concept car, both of which were featured on the stand.
"Both the Peugeot 408X and the Peugeot Inception concept are a perfect demonstration of Peugeot's capacity for innovation and a brilliant illustration of the brand's three values: Allure, Emotion, Excellence. With their head-turning appearance, these two vehicles will Chinese customers to Peugeot in an unforgettable way.”
